East Timor after referendum<\/p>\n

Soon after UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan announced that the
\nrecent polling in East Timor was won by the proindependent group,
\nthe situation in that region got heated and tense, and thousands
\nof East Timorese fled the territory. The number of refugees both
\nfrom prointegration and proindependent segments keep increasing
\nday by day. The situation has become worse as many groups and
\nindividuals expressed their dissatisfaction over the way the UN
\nMission in East Timor (UNAMET) handled the referendum. It was
\nalleged that UNAMET had taken the side of the proindependent
\ngroup, and this resulted in sporadic physical clashes which
\nclaimed the lives of innocent people.<\/p>\n
Observing this phenomenon, I have good reason to say that
\nthere is an indication of foreign elements who were lingering in
\nEast Timor to exert pressure on the people. Many of the refugees
\nare believed to have preferred to profess Indonesian citizenship
\nrather than having forced independence.<\/p>\n
If the refugees keep increasing and murders go on unchecked it
\nis not impossible that once East Timor is transferred to the
\nNational Resistance Council for an Independent East Timor (CNRT)
\nand thus became an independent and sovereign country, no East
\nTimorese will be left there -- a country void of people. Then
\nwhat does freedom mean for the East Timorese people?<\/p>\n
