East Java regent cops flack<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Forty religious teachers from Banyuwangi, East Java,
\nand activists of the youth branch of the largest Muslim
\norganization Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) on Monday met legislators here
\nto demand that their regent resign.<\/p>\n
Antara reported they met with House Commission II, which among
\nother offices deals with the Ministry of Home Affairs, and
\nconveyed a petition asking for regent Purnomo Sidik to quit.<\/p>\n
The regent, who holds the rank of colonel in the Armed Forces,
\nhas been accused of being partly responsible for the killing
\nspree claiming more then 100 victims including several religious
\nteachers who are also NU members.<\/p>\n
After the meeting, the delegates, led by Abdurrahman Hasan,
\nsaid the petition for the regent's resignation was based on the
\nfact that he has been unable to settle the murders.<\/p>\n
The legislators were asked to convey the petition to Minister
\nof Home Affairs Syarwan Hamid.<\/p>\n
They also planned to meet the minister and also legislators in
\nthe Golkar and Armed Forces faction.<\/p>\n
Secretary-general of the NU youth organization, Azwar Anas,
\nsaid a similar motion to the Banyuwangi council had not received
\na response. The religious teachers said Purnomo swindled them, as
\ntheir signatures, which were requested in a post-Idul Fitri
\ngathering with him, were allegedly given to the Minister as proof
\nof their support for him.<\/p>",
