        "content": "<p>The East Java Provincial Government is intensifying efforts to\nextinguish and prevent forest and land fires (karhutla) in the Bromo\narea to minimise the risk of new fire spots emerging while the emergency\nalert status is in effect. \u201cWe are focusing on extinguishing the fires\nand preventing the causes of possible subsequent incidents. Therefore,\nthe Bromo perimeter is being restricted and surveillance tightened,\u201d\nsaid East Java Deputy Governor Emil Elestianto Dardak in Surabaya on\nTuesday. Emil explained that field surveillance was strengthened after a\nmeeting led by the Minister of Forestry established the emergency alert\nstatus in the Bromo area. The Head of the Operations Bureau has been\ntasked with ensuring that surveillance measures are implemented in an\nintegrated manner. According to him, the emergency alert status provides\na basis for increasing legal enforcement if violations that could\npotentially trigger new fires are discovered. \u201cScientifically, wind can\ncarry fire material to other locations, so fires can spread even if the\ninitial point is different,\u201d he said. The East Java Provincial\nGovernment is also continuing to deploy aerial firefighting resources.\nThree helicopters have been put back into operation to extinguish fires\nin the P30 area after one unit previously underwent maintenance. In\naddition to aerial firefighting, manual handling is being carried out in\nthe Dingklik area, which briefly flared up again during the night.
