East Java Governor Basofi tired of PDI bickering<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): East Java Governor Basofi Soedirman admitted he
\nhad the right to force an end to the prolonged conflicts at the
\nIndonesian Democratic Party (PDI), but would not do so for fear
\nof acting autocratically.<\/p>\n
\"I'm tired of the conflicts in PDI,\" he told reporters here
\nyesterday. He admitted that the problem of rival leadership at
\nthe East Java chapter of PDI was becoming a headache for him.<\/p>\n
\"I'm tired of appealing to PDI to solve its conflicts itself,\"
\nhe said, after attending a ceremony in which Minister of Home
\nAffairs Moch. Yogie S.M. installed three vice governors and the
\nrector of the Institute for State Administration.<\/p>\n
Basofi invited Soetjipto and Latief Pudjosakti, both PDI
\nactivists who claimed to be the rightful East Java chapter
\nchairman, to a reconciliation meeting in December. The attempt
\nwas foiled because Soetjipto failed to show up.<\/p>\n
\"I don't know whether Soetjipto has the good will to solve the
\nconflict. Maybe his camp just doesn't have the courage to face
\nthe other group,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Yogie denied that the central executive board of
\nPDI had asked to meet him.<\/p>\n
The leadership conflict at East Java chapter of PDI posed a
\nproblem in the preparations for the 1997 general elections. The
\ngovernment has set January 31st as the deadline for the
\nestablishment of the provincial committee for elections.<\/p>\n
All elements of the political contestants--the ruling Golkar,
\nPDI and the United Development Party (PPP)--should be represented
\nin the committee.<\/p>\n
There have been suggestions that the government will either
\nchoose a third person, or let the committee be established
\nwithout PDI representatives.<\/p>\n
Basofi, however, rejected both options. \"I think we'll have to
\nwait and see what happens,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Latief, who happens to be a member of the East Java provincial
\nlegislative council in charge of electing vice governors, made a
\nappearance at the ministry yesterday.<\/p>\n
Through the press, he called on the PDI executive board not to
\nuse strong-arm tactics in its' effort to solve the conflict.<\/p>\n
\"The party leaders should not resort to a \"power\" approach,\"
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
Latief was widely reported to have been enjoying the support
\nof the local administration. Some analysts said he also enjoyed
