East Java dominates, Olympic qualifiers win and lose<\/p>\n

SURABAYA (JP): Host East Java demonstrated its domination
\nduring the second day of competition at the 15th National Games
\n(PON), increasing its medal haul to 21 golds, 10 silvers and 13
\nbronzes.<\/p>\n
East Java's impressive performance easily outpaced defending
\nchampion Jakarta, whose eight golds, eight silvers and 14 bronzes
\nmoved it to third behind West Java, which has claimed nine golds,
\nnine silvers and nine bronzes.<\/p>\n
The competition on Wednesday also saw a number of national
\nwomen athletes being groomed for the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney
\nswallow the bitter pill of defeat.<\/p>\n
Women's archer Hamdiah, an Olympic hopeful, could not hide her
\ndisappointment after failing to earn a medal for East Kalimantan
\nin the FITA round of the women's individual target event.<\/p>\n
Fellow Olympic hopefuls Lusia Elizabeth Sumampouw of Jakarta
\nand Purnama Pandiangan of Lampung earned a gold and a bronze
\nrespectively in the 70-meter target event.<\/p>\n
Lusia scored a 314 while Purnama had a 311, the same score
\nearned by Rosena Gelanteh of West Java, who took the silver.<\/p>\n
Another member of the Olympics training program, IGAP Wulan B,
\nalso failed to earn a medal. All four of the national archers
\nfailed to secure medals in the 60m, 50m and 30m target events.<\/p>\n
Hamdiah blamed her poor results on the wind. \"I'm very
\ndisappointed because I couldn't win any medals for my province.
\nBut I'm not accustomed to the atmosphere here. The wind is
\ncompletely different from the Senayan range in Jakarta, where I
\ntrain every day. Moreover, I only practiced for two days and it
\nwasn't enough.\"<\/p>\n
Her performance was so poor that Hamdiah suggested the
\nIndonesian Archery Association (Perpani) reconsider her
\nparticipation in the Olympics.<\/p>\n
\"Coach Lee Kang-hyun said PON was only training for us. But
\ndue to my poor results, I'll suggest to him and Perpani officials
\nthat they choose better archers for the Olympics. I'm not the one
\nwho must go, but the best archers must. I wanted to win this
\nevent and I trained hard, but God did not give me the victory,\"
\nshe said.<\/p>\n
In the tae kwon do arena, Juana Wangsa Putri, who has
\nqualified for the Olympics, earned gold in the women's flyweight
\ndivision with a narrow 6-5 victory over Regina Maya.<\/p>\n
Juana's South Korean coach Oh Il-nam said: \"She's still the
\nbest. She will recover to reach her peak form.\"<\/p>\n
In the semifinals, Juana outclassed junior fighter Rahadewi
\nNeta of East Java, who is also being trained for the Olympics.
\nNeta shared the bronze with Yunizar of North Sumatra.<\/p>\n
\"Winning and losing is common in every match. Neta performed
\nvery good but she lacks experience. In the long term, she can be
\na champion,\" Juana said.<\/p>\n
Neta's brother Satrio Rahardani grabbed the gold in the men's
\nflyweight division, overcoming Thomas M. of Maluku despite a
\nprotest.<\/p>\n
Old hand Andrie Halim of West Java claimed the gold in the
\nmen's heavyweight division by defeating Tulus Abdiansyah of North
\nSumatra, while Ratna Marleni won the gold for Lampung in the
\nwomen's heavyweight division by beating Santi Agustina of West
\nJava.<\/p>\n
