Surabaya (ANTARA) - The Deputy Governor of East Java, Emil\nElestiability Dardak, believes that the Indonesian Muslim Intellectuals\nAssociation (ICMI) holds a strategic role in strengthening public policy\nbased on science and innovation within the region.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf ICMI can play its part, its resonance in East Java could be\nextraordinary. We hope for discourse like this to occur in the public\nsphere, demonstrating that within every problem, there is a root cause\nthat needs to be investigated scientifically,\u201d said Emil while attending\nthe inauguration of the ICMI East Java Regional Board for the 2026-2031\nterm at the Grahadi State Building, Surabaya, on Saturday night.<\/p>\n
Emil stated that the role of intellectuals should not stop at\nacademic studies but must be translated into public policies capable of\naddressing societal issues. According to him, East Java offers vast\nopportunities for service by intellectuals, given its population of\napproximately 42 million, its industrial base, natural resources, and\nthe presence of numerous universities across various regions.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe space for service for Muslim intellectuals in East Java is\ncertainly very wide across various sectors,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n
Emil cited the issue of forest and land fires as an example of a\nproblem that needs to be analysed based on scientific field conditions\nbefore determining handling measures. He stated that the government\nneeds to translate scientific findings and analyses into realistic\npolicies, including by optimising available resources.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is what we want to encourage moving forward: how to investigate\nscientifically and then translate those findings into public policy,\u201d he\nsaid.<\/p>\n
According to Emil, a science-based approach is essential to ensure\nthat problem-solving is not merely based on assumptions or public\nreactions. He also noted that applying technology to solve public issues\nrequires testing and development processes to ensure results are\nappropriate for field conditions.<\/p>\n
Emil expressed hope that ICMI could serve as a partner to the\nregional government in strengthening knowledge-based policies while\nsimultaneously developing innovations that benefit the community.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the Chairman of ICMI East Java, Pitono Nugroho, stated\nthat the management for the next five-year period is directed towards\nstrengthening the organisation\u2019s four driving engines: strategic\nthinking, innovation, collaboration, and impact.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn the future, ICMI does not aim to be a large organisation, but\nrather to have a large impact,\u201d said Pitono.<\/p>\n
The General Chairman of ICMI, Arif Satria, remarked that East Java\npossesses strengths in both natural and intellectual resources that can\nserve as capital for developing innovation.
