        "content": "<p>East Java declared safe for elections<\/p>\n<p>SURABAYA: East Java police chief Maj. Gen. M. Dayat declared<br>\non Tuesday the province was safe and ready to enter the election<br>\ncampaigning period. The security authorities, he said, were<br>\ndeploying all available personnel -- namely 18,000 police, 4,000<br>\nmilitary personnel and 22,000 trained civilians.<\/p>\n<p>The police chief identified a number of areas that were<br>\nconsidered prone to unrest.  They include the northern coastal<br>\narea of Tuban, Gresik and Surabaya, the horse shoe area of Madura<br>\nand northeastern coastal towns of Pasuruan, Probolinggo,<br>\nSitubondo and Banyuwangi.<\/p>\n<p>\"We are monitoring these areas seriously,\" Dayat said.<\/p>\n<p>Surabaya, the capital of East Java which has a population of<br>\n34 million, has in the past few days been gearing up for the<br>\nelection campaigning period. Security personnel were posted in<br>\nvarious strategic areas such as government offices and shopping<br>\ncenters.<\/p>\n<p>Supermarkets such as Hero and Alfa Retial saw long queues of<br>\nshoppers wishing to stock up on supplies.<\/p>\n<p>All neighborhoods in the city have accelerated local security<br>\nmeasures including night watches, while posh housing complexes<br>\nhave reinforced security measures such as installing barbed wire.<\/p>\n<p>The first day of campaigning here on Wednesday will be used by<br>\nGolkar, PDKB, PARI, PNI, PDR, PSII-1905, Republic Party, PIB,<br>\nSuni Party and Crescent Star Party (PBB).<\/p>\n<p>The PBB and Golkar will hold campaigning inside the Pancasila<br>\nSports Stadium and Women's Building. Open space gatherings are<br>\nheld by several parties near the zoo and the Putro Agung square.<\/p>\n<p>Each of the parties here have four rounds of campaigning, but<br>\nstreet rallies are prohibited.
