        "content": "<p>East Java bans logging<\/p>\n<p>MALANG, East Java: All government institutions, including<br>\nstate forestry company Perhutani, should observe a five-to-10-<br>\nyear moratorium on logging, while intensifying their<br>\nreforestation activities, East Java Governor Imam Utomo said on<br>\nThursday.<\/p>\n<p>He said institutions should not pay mere &quot;lip service&quot; to the<br>\nmoratorium and urged the public to monitor the implementation of<br>\nthe reforestation program.<\/p>\n<p>The governor promised a monthly allowance of Rp 150,000<br>\n(US$17.8) to all those who planted trees, took care of them for<br>\nseveral years and monitored three to four hectares of forest in<br>\ntheir region.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding cases of illegal logging in the Cangar forest in<br>\nMalang, Imam said his administration would seek the approval of<br>\nthe province&apos;s legislative council to close the area and increase<br>\nthe number of forest guards.<\/p>\n<p>He expressed concern over the construction of some buildings<br>\nat the foot of Cangar hill. -- JP<\/p>",
