East Java bans logging<\/p>\n
MALANG, East Java: All government institutions, including
\nstate forestry company Perhutani, should observe a five-to-10-
\nyear moratorium on logging, while intensifying their
\nreforestation activities, East Java Governor Imam Utomo said on
\nThursday.<\/p>\n
He said institutions should not pay mere "lip service" to the
\nmoratorium and urged the public to monitor the implementation of
\nthe reforestation program.<\/p>\n
The governor promised a monthly allowance of Rp 150,000
\n(US$17.8) to all those who planted trees, took care of them for
\nseveral years and monitored three to four hectares of forest in
\ntheir region.<\/p>\n
Regarding cases of illegal logging in the Cangar forest in
\nMalang, Imam said his administration would seek the approval of
\nthe province's legislative council to close the area and increase
\nthe number of forest guards.<\/p>\n
He expressed concern over the construction of some buildings
\nat the foot of Cangar hill. -- JP<\/p>",
