East Java backs Hamzah, Tosari<\/p>\n
SURABAYA: The East Java chapter of the United Development
\nParty (PPP) nominated Vice President Hamzah Haz and House deputy
\nspeaker Tosari Widjaja candidates for the party's chairmanship
\nfor the 2003-2008 period on Friday.<\/p>\n
Incumbent PPP chairman Hamzah has said he would not contest
\nanother term if there were no contenders from the younger
\ngeneration for the election scheduled for May.<\/p>\n
Secretary of East Java's PPP chapter, Muhammad Mirdasy, said
\nif Hamzah declined the nomination, the chapter would support
\nTosari, who is one of the party's deputy chairmen.<\/p>\n
During the congress in May, the chapter would campaign for
\nregeneration in the central board of executives, which is
\ncurrently dominated by older figures.<\/p>\n
Mirdasy expressed disappointment in Hamzah, who he said would
\nuse state facilities when he attends the party's anniversary

JAKARTA: The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI
\nPerjuangan) is attempting to restore its deteriorating image by
\nintroducing a special post office box where the public can report
\ncorruption committed by party cadres.<\/p>\n
The address was launched on Friday less than one month after
\nparty official Kwik Kian Gie said PDI Perjuangan was the most
\ncorrupt party in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
PDI Perjuangan officials said the move was designed to
\ndetermine if party cadres were involved in the corruption
\ndisclosed by Kwik, who is the State Minister of National
\nDevelopment Planning.<\/p>\n
"We will know whether there are many party cadres who are
\ninvolved in corrupt practices," said M. Prakosa, who chairs the
\nparty's research and development bureau, at a press briefing here
\non Friday. Prakosa is the Minister of Forestry.<\/p>\n
He suggested that people send information to P.O. Box 9000,
\nJKP 10900 should they know of cadres who abuse their power and

BANDARLAMPUNG, Lampung: The secretary of the Golkar provincial
\nchapter in Lampung, Oktavianus, was placed under the custody of
\nthe prosecutors' office on Friday for alleged corruption.<\/p>\n
The suspect was sent to Rajabasa Penitentiary after hours of
\nquestioning.<\/p>\n
Lampung prosecutors' office deputy chief Darmono said
\nOktavianus was accused of misusing Rp 15.8 billion (about US$1.7
\nmillion) in state funds allocated for literature, in cooperation
\nwith another suspect Sutoto, the head of the province's education
\noffice.<\/p>\n
Darmono said Oktavianus was detained because he would not
\ncooperative during questioning and had defied three summons.<\/p>\n

JAKARTA: Foreign minister Hassan Wirayuda is slated to visit
\nMyanmar and Thailand between April 1 and April 5 to discuss

Foreign Ministry director for East Asia and Pacific Primo Alui
\nJoelianto said on Friday that during the Thai leg of the trip
\nHassan would discuss efforts to strengthen economic ties and
\nother issues such as the exclusive economic zone.<\/p>\n
Hassan will begin his trip in Myanmar, where he will stay
\nuntil April 3.<\/p>\n
The minister is slated to meet high-ranking officials of both
\ncountries.<\/p>\n
