East Indonesia no dumping site<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A senior official of the Ministry of Home
\nAffairs has categorically denied suggestions that official
\npostings to eastern Indonesia are a punishment.<\/p>\n
\"Such an opinion is totally groundless,\" Rapiuddin Hamarung,
\nthe chief of the ministry's Research and Development Agency, was
\nquoted by Antara news agency as saying.<\/p>\n
Rapiuddin, speaking in Ambon, Maluku, underlined that civil
\nservants have taken an oath of office to be prepared to be
\nassigned in any part of the archipelago.<\/p>\n
Many officials posted in eastern provinces considered their
\nassignments useful in enhancing their careers, he said. Many have
\nbeen successful after being reassigned to the central
\nadministration, he added.<\/p>\n
\"Some even see their posting in the east as a grooming place
\nthat projects them to central administration jobs,\" he assured.<\/p>\n
Rapiuddin said the people fanning the rumor that Eastern
\nIndonesia is a dumping ground could not adjust to their new
\nenvironment.<\/p>\n
The eastern provinces, like Maluku and Irian Jaya, are
\nconsiderably underdeveloped when compared to the western parts of
\nthe country. The government is currently pouring resources and
\nattention into the economic development of the eastern provinces.
