Java<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): A three-day earth purification ceremony<br>\nfeaturing local arts and cultural activities is being held in a<br>\nvillage about one hours drive from Yogyakarta this weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Organized by the Soran Foundation, the event will take place<br>\nin Soran hamlet, Duwet village, Klaten regency, Central Java. It<br>\nwill begin on Saturday afternoon with the opening of a bazaar<br>\nmarked by a jathilan, a tranced horse dance, followed by a<br>\nperformance by a children&apos;s traditional orchestra and other<br>\nJavanese art performances and prayers. A wayang (shadow puppet)<br>\nshow and kenduri (a ritual gathering) will be held on Sunday.<br>\nMonday will feature a furniture and handicraft exhibition, and a<br>\nbazaar of food and home industry products.<\/p>\n<p>Earth purifications, or ruwatan bumi, a Hindu-Javanese<br>\ntradition with Islamic elements, often are held across Java to<br>\npromote peace. They also are thanksgiving ceremonies where<br>\nvillagers express their gratitude to the Creator and cleanse<br>\nthemselves of evil influences.<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony usually takes place three times during the year:<br>\nduring Idul Adha (Islamic Sacrifice Day), which falls on March 28<br>\nthis year; Maulud Nabi (Prophet Muhammad&apos;s Birthday) on June 26;<br>\nand 1 Suro (Javanese New Year), on April 17.
