Early screening for KPK hopefuls<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: As many as 40 candidates for the Corruption
\nEradication Commission (KPK) executive body are expected to
\nundergo the third and last interview for the five seats in the
\ncommission on Saturday.<\/p>\n
The KPK selection committee had announced that it would
\naccelerate the selection process due to time constraints. The
\nprofile assessment was previously scheduled for next week.<\/p>\n
The selection committee had planned to narrow the shortlist
\ndown to 10 before it is given an authorization from the House of
\nRepresentatives on Dec. 12 because the commission must be
\ninaugurated by President Megawati Soekarnoputri on Dec. 27,
\naccording to law.<\/p>\n
However, it was rescheduled because President Megawati was
\nslated to go abroad for a state visit next month.<\/p>\n
KPK chairman Romli Atmasasmita said that the accelerated
\nschedule would not harm the selection process.<\/p>\n
KPK has been dubbed a \"super body\" as it would have the
\nauthority to investigate and prosecute corruption cases, a
\nprivilege earlier assumed by prosecutors and police only.<\/p>\n
KPK may also take over the investigation and prosecution by
\nthe two law enforcing institutions. --JP<\/p>",
