Jakarta (ANTARA) \u2013 Dr.\u00a0Ivan Rinaldy, a specialist in oncologic\nsurgery at Bethsaida Hospital Gading Serpong, says early detection\nthrough routine examinations is an important step in addressing breast\ntumours, as such abnormalities do not always cause pain in the early\nstages.<\/p>\n
\u201cMany patients come because they find a lump that has actually been\npresent for quite a long time, but does not feel painful, so it is\nconsidered not dangerous. In fact, breast tumours, especially malignant\nones, do not always cause pain in the early stages. Therefore, every new\nlump that persists should be checked,\u201d said Dr.\u00a0Ivan Rinaldy in a\nstatement in Jakarta on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Global Cancer Observatory (GLOBOCAN) data estimated that in 2022\nthere were 66,271 new breast cancer cases in Indonesia with 22,598\ndeaths. Meanwhile, five-year prevalence reached around 209,748 people,\nor an estimated number of patients still alive five years after\ndiagnosis.<\/p>\n
He explained that breast tumours often begin with small changes that\ngo unnoticed. Symptoms to watch for include the appearance of a new lump\nin the breast or armpit, changes in the shape or size of the breast,\nchanges to the skin of the breast such as thickening or wrinkling,\nnipple inversion, or discharge from the nipple not related to\nbreastfeeding.<\/p>\n
According to him, early detection can be pursued through several\nexamination steps. The first is SADARI or self-breast examination, which\nis recommended to be performed once a month, ideally on days seven to\nten after the menstrual period. For women who are postmenopausal, the\nexamination can be performed on the same date every month.<\/p>\n
The second step is SADANIS (clinical breast examination), namely a\nclinical examination by a doctor to evaluate the condition of the breast\nand the glands in the armpit area and around the clavicle. If necessary,\nfollow-up investigations can be conducted through ultrasound (USG),\nmammography, or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the breast.<\/p>\n
Treatment of breast tumours depends on the type and stage of disease.\nFor benign tumours such as fibroadenoma or cyst, patients usually\nrequire only regular monitoring. However, if the lump enlarges or causes\nsymptoms, the doctor may recommend removal via a minor operation.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, for malignant tumours or breast cancer, treatment is\ncarried out through a multidisciplinary approach involving oncologic\nsurgeons, radiologists, pathologists, and other cancer specialists.\nTherapies can include surgery such as lumpectomy or mastectomy,\nchemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormonal therapy and immunotherapy.<\/p>\n
The Director of Bethsaida Hospital Gading Serpong, Dr.\u00a0Margareth\nAryani Santoso, said that they provide Breast Clinic services at the\nWomen\u2019s Health Center to support integrated examination and management\nof breast tumours.<\/p>\n
