E. Timorese refugees' repatriation<\/p>\n
ATAMBUA, East Nusa Tenggara: The visit next week by East
\nTimorese political leader Xanana Gusmao to the East Nusa Tenggara
\nprovincial capital of Kupang is expected to speed up the
\nrepatriation of East Timorese refugees, a local legislator says.<\/p>\n
Blasius J. Manek, chairman of the provincial legislative
\ncouncil, said that representatives of the thousands of refugees
\nin West Timor would meet Xanana to discuss their future on
\nMonday.<\/p>\n
\"They (Xanana and the refugees) will have the chance to have a
\nheart-to-heart talk. This, I am sure, will accelerate the
\nrepatriation process,\" Blasius said.<\/p>\n
Blasius has frequently met with refugee leaders in various
\nrefugee camps scattered over several regencies and tried to
\npersuade them to take part in the meeting with Xanana.<\/p>\n
The East Timorese fled, or were forced to flee, their homeland
\nin the wake of the violence that flared following the UN-
\nsanctioned 1999 referendum that gave the territory independence.<\/p>\n
A refugee in Belu regency, Pedro Ximenes, said he hoped Xanana
\nwould say what the East Timorese and Indonesian authorities
\nintended to do with the refugees after the UNHCR stopped its
