E. Timorese leaders meet in Kupang<\/p>\n
KUPANG, East Nusa Tenggara: Twenty three East Timorese liurai
\n(chieftains) from two warring groups are scheduled to gather in
\nthe capital of East Nusa Tenggara, Kupang, on Tuesday to hold
\nreconciliation talks.<\/p>\n
Uni Timor Aswain (UNTAS), who are to host the talks, said on
\nMonday that the two warring groups have agreed to try to find a
\ncompromise over their differences on the future of East Timor.<\/p>\n
Baucau bishop Mgr. Basilio Nascimento will mediate the
\nmeeting.<\/p>\n
On Monday, 12 tribal leaders from East Timor arrived in
\nKupang. They were Cipriano Correra from Baucau, Anthonio Vicente
\nfrom Viqueque, Joa Brito from Laga, Augusto da Silva from
\nLiquica, Alexio Cortereal from Ainaro, Constantino Barreto from
\nBobonarao, Domingos Saldanha from Aileu, Alexio Ximenes from
\nBaucau, Francisco Gutteres, Francisco Soares and Paulo Assis, all
\nfrom Dili.<\/p>\n
About 11 East Timorese chieftains, currently residing in West
\nTimor are expected to participate in the meeting.<\/p>\n
UNTAS chairman Domingos M.D. Soares said the meeting would not
\nadopt a political approach to settle problems that have arisen
\nbetween supporters of prointegration and proindependence but it
\nwill place emphasis on the use of East Timorese traditional
\nculture to settle their differences. (30)<\/p>",
