Timorese expelled from embassy<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Eight East Timorese people, reportedly seeking<br>\npolitical asylum, entered the German embassy compound early<br>\nyesterday morning but were later expelled by security guards.<\/p>\n<p>Antara quoted Press Attache Dieter Lamle as saying that around<br>\n60 people, some of them with East Timorese features, approached<br>\nthe embassy at around 2 a.m. Eight managed to climb over the<br>\nfence, but later left at the request of the embassy guards.<\/p>\n<p>Notified by the embassy guards, a number of Indonesian<br>\nsecurity personnel then arrived at the site but stayed out of the<br>\ncompound.<\/p>\n<p>Lamle said that the eight East Timorese were then taken away<br>\nby the Indonesian security personnel, but the embassy is being<br>\nkept informed about their whereabouts and condition.<\/p>\n<p>Lamle's statement refuted some earlier reports about<br>\nIndonesian security personnel forcing their way into the embassy<br>\nand using violence to expel the East Timorese.<\/p>\n<p>Reuter quoted unidentified sources who, claiming to be<br>\nwitnesses, said that the East Timorese were kicked, slapped, and<br>\nbeaten by the soldiers, and that one person's head was bleeding.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, AFP quoted a counselor at the embassy Wilfried<br>\nGrolig as saying that the embassy guards \"managed to convince<br>\nthem to stay out...They came over the fence and we pushed them<br>\nout.\"<\/p>\n<p>Grolig denied that the guards used violence on the intruders.<br>\n\"The guards are paid to guard us,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>Since late September, 72 East Timorese have left for Portugal<br>\nafter entering embassies in Jakarta. This was the first time the<br>\nGerman embassy had been involved.<\/p>\n<p>The most recent break-in was in March when four Timorese<br>\nyouths entered the Polish and French embassies in Jakarta,<br>\nseeking asylum. The four left for Portugal, which is East Timor's<br>\nformer colonial power.<\/p>\n<p>East Timor was integrated into Indonesia in 1976. The United<br>\nNations, however, still recognizes Lisbon as the administering<br>\npower. (swe)<\/p>",
