Timor rights defendant cleared<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA: For the third consecutive time in recent weeks, the<br>\nSupreme Court has acquitted a defendant of all charges of<br>\ninvolvement in the 1999 mayhem in East Timor.<\/p>\n<p>The panel of five judges stated that prosecutors had failed to<br>\nprovide convincing evidence or valid legal arguments linking Lt.<br>\nCol. Yayat Sudrajat, former Liquica district military commander,<br>\nwith the bloodshed before and after a UN-administered ballot that<br>\nresulted in East Timor's independence.<\/p>\n<p>In their verdict, which was issued earlier this month, but<br>\nonly made public on Thursday, the judges said prosecutors could<br>\nnot provide evidence that Yayat had links to the pro-integration<br>\nmilitia who attacked and murdered dozens of East Timorese<br>\ncivilians taking refuge in houses and churches in Liquica, Dili<br>\nand Covalima between April and September 1999.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, the country's highest court exonerated former East<br>\nTimor police chief and current Papua police chief Insp.
