Timor refugees cause trouble<\/p>\n<p>ATAMBUA, East Nusa Tenggara: East Timorese refugees in the<br>\nEast Nusa Tenggara town of Belu continue to intimidate and<br>\nblackmail locals, residents and officials said.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the refugees, armed with sharp weapons, have robbed<br>\nlocal residents, Belu Regent Marsel Bere told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n<p>\"I frequently receive reports from village personnel that<br>\nrefugees are intimidating and terrorizing local residents, making<br>\nthem very anxious,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>Bere said the victims were powerless against the blackmailers,<br>\nwho often carried sharp weapons.<\/p>\n<p>The government has extended the deadline until August for<br>\nthousands of East Timorese refugees to return home or be<br>\nresettled in Sumatra, Kalimantan or Sulawesi.<\/p>\n<p>A number of local people have been the victims of murder,<br>\nviolent robberies and thefts since the refugees arrived in<br>\nAtambua in 1999. Bere said that at least 10 people had been<br>\nmurdered by refugees, and many more had been severely injured and<br>\nrobbed.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the refugees had also taken over fertile land<br>\nowned by locals.<\/p>\n<p>Belu Military commander Lt. Col. Inf. Didi Sudiana said he had<br>\nreceived the reports and had ordered his men to take action<br>\nagainst the refugees in order to prevent conflict in the regency.<br>\n--JP<\/p>",
