E. Timor police kill ex-militiamen<\/p>\n
ATAMBUA, East Nusa Tenggara: Authorities said on Monday they
\nwere increasing security in the border area between East Nusa
\nTenggara (NTT) and East Timor after the killing of a former pro-
\nJakarta militiamen, blamed on police from the neighboring
\ncountry.<\/p>\n
The East Timorese police have been accused of shooting dead
\nVegas Bibilitu, a resident from Turiskain village, Raihat
\nsubdistrict, Belu regency, on Friday.<\/p>\n
Kupang Wirasakti military chief Col. Moeswarno Moesanif
\nconfirmed the shooting of the former East Timorese militiamen in
\nan area close to the Balibaca River, which falls within the
\nTactical Coordination zone.<\/p>\n
Belu Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Agus Nugroho said that based
\non a preliminary investigation, Vegas was shot dead in the chest
\nwhile trying to sneak into East Timor across the river, carrying
\narrows.<\/p>\n
Quoting a statement by an East Timorese police officer, he
\nsaid the shooting was aimed at self-defense as Vegas had fired an
\narrow at another East Timorese police officer.<\/p>\n
Vegas' body was still with the East Timor police, who are
\ninvestigating the incident.<\/p>\n
The Belu authorities temporarily closed Turiskain traditional
\nmarket, some two kilometers from the scene, to prevent possible
\nrevenge attacks by local residents.<\/p>\n
Lt. Col. Joko Setiyono, a security taskforce commander in the
\nborder area, said the market would be reopened soon after the
\nsituation returned to normal.<\/p>\n
\"The incident has prompted us to order all Indonesian Military
\ntroops to increase security surveillance to maintain peace in the
