Timor needs arts council<\/p>\n<p>DILI, East Timor: It's high time that East Timor establishes<br>\nan arts council to preserve as well as develop the province's<br>\nwealth of culture and heritage, a local official says.<\/p>\n<p>\"East Timor needs an arts council and the plan is feasible,\"<br>\nsaid Soekarman, head of the province's education and culture<br>\noffice, the Antara news agency reported.<\/p>\n<p>The proposal was first broached by a delegation from the<br>\nCommission IX of the House of Representatives last week.<br>\nLegislator Jatikusumo, who headed the delegation, said such a<br>\ncouncil could explore the wealth of culture and art of East<br>\nTimor, help preserve it and develop it as well.<\/p>\n<p>Soekarman added that the council could also act as a filter<br>\nagainst the intrusion of unwanted side effects from foreign<br>\ncultures.
