E. Nusa Tenggara ship routes suspended<\/p>\n
KUPANG, East Nusa Tenggara: State-shipping company PT Angkutan
\nSungai Danau dan Penyeberangan says it has suspended operating in
\nwaters of East Nusa Tenggara amid fears that bad weather will worsen
\nthis month.<\/p>\n
With waves reaching 3.5-meters tall, traveling at sea was too
\ndangerous, F. Matitaputty, the operational branch manager of ASDP
\nin Kupang, said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
He said the company had suspended all sea travel from the
\nprovincial capital of Kupang to Alor, Waingapu, Larantuka, Sabu
\nand Aimere. The destinations are on islands located north and
\nwest of Kupang and require the passage through the Sawu Sea, the
\nSumba Sea and the Ombai Straits.<\/p>\n
\"We are forced to suspend travel on the routes because of the
\nstormy weather,\" said Matitaputty, explaining that the same
\nproblem suspended operations last month.<\/p>\n
\"We want to ensure the safety of passengers considering that
\nwaves have reached 3.5-meters in height.\"<\/p>\n
Bad weather has also affected air transportation. State-owned
\nairline Merpati said it had canceled its flights on a Casa 212
\nbound to Alor and another on a Boeing 373 bound for Denpasar,
\nBali and Surabaya.<\/p>\n
It was unclear for how long the suspensions would last.<\/p>\n
The weather could worsen this month, said the head of Kupang's
\nMeteorology and Geophysics Agency, Sugeng Tolani.<\/p>\n
He warned of what he called variable winds, which were
\ndifferent types of winds that could trigger a storm.<\/p>\n
\"In our observation, there is a possibility of variable winds
\nforming on the West Timor side this month,\" Sugeng said. -- JP<\/p>",
