Kalimantan targets Rp 762b for PON<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA: East Kalimantan, the designated host for the 2008<br>\nNational Sports, will seek to set aside a budget of Rp 762<br>\nbillion for the quadrennial event, locally known as PON,<br>\naccording to the administration's chief executive.<\/p>\n<p>East Kalimantan won the right to host the games, edging out<br>\nWest Java and South Sulawesi, following a vote during a meeting<br>\nheld by the National Sports Council (KONI) earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>\"After the President and KONI endorsed our appointment, we<br>\nhave started preparing ourselves, including our funding plans,\"<br>\nGovernor Suwarna, who heads the organizing committee, told<br>\nreporters after meeting KONI officials here on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>He said the money would be allocated for the establishment of<br>\nnew sporting facilities, renovations and the cost of staging the<br>\nevent.<\/p>\n<p>The committee plans a tentative 38 events to be held in the<br>\nprovincial capital Samarinda, Balikpapan, Bontang and Tenggarong.<\/p>\n<p>In the last PON in Surabaya, East Kalimantan finished eighth<br>\nbut Suwarna said that the local team would bounce back when it<br>\nplayed host in 2008.<\/p>\n<p>The next PON will be held in the South Sumatra capital of<br>\nPalembang in 2004. -- JP<\/p>",
