E. Java workers may lose jobs<\/p>\n
SURABAYA, East Java: The economic crisis has caused 10
\ncompanies in East Java to ask for the government's permission to
\ndismiss 2,864 workers.<\/p>\n
An official with the province's manpower office, Mul Effendy,
\nsaid yesterday the request for the mass dismissal had been made
\nin the last three months.<\/p>\n
\"The number of layoffs may increase in the coming months, but
\nwe hope we can curb it,\" Effendy was quoted by Antara as saying,
\nadding that the figure excluded individual dismissals.<\/p>\n
He refused to name the 10 companies, but said they were firms
\nexporting shoes, engines, textiles, electronic and metal goods,
\nand construction companies.<\/p>\n
Altogether they employ 8,865 workers.<\/p>\n
The companies are located in Surabaya and the neighboring
\ntowns of Gresik, Sidoarjo and Malang.<\/p>\n
Effendy said six of the companies had reached agreement with
\ntheir workers on severance payment, while the other four are
\nstill negotiating the payment.<\/p>\n
\"We have called on management of the companies to reduce
\nworking hours and the extra work of their employees or improve
\nefficiency by not wasting energy, but to no avail,\" he said.
