E. Java students protest against anarchy<\/p>\n
SURABAYA, East Java: Hundreds of students affiliated with the
\nEast Java Student Executive Board (BEM) marched on the Surabaya
\nprovincial council to demand the immediate revival of a stalled
\ncase.<\/p>\n
The protesters, who came from a number of universities in the
\nprovince, carried posters and banners calling for an end to
\nviolence and for upholding law in connection with a recent act of
\nthuggery in Malang.<\/p>\n
"On March 19, a group claiming to be Banteng Muda Indonesia
\n(BMI) committed violence against students in Malang, and posed a
\nthreat to the city's student movement; thus, the culprit must be
\nfound," student spokesman Deyis Nilfaryadi said.<\/p>\n
Protest coordinator Iksan Tualeka said the police had been too
\nslow in investigating the case, since they were under the
\ninfluence of the local chapter of the Indonesian Democratic Party
\nof Struggle (PDI Perjuangan), which had close ties with BMI.<\/p>\n
Zainuddin, a member of the military\/police faction at the
\nprovincial legislature, promised to convey the protesters'
