E. Java PDI has new chair<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: The central board of executives of the Indonesian
\nDemocratic Party (PDI) chose Sucipto Saturday as the new chairman
\nof the party's East Java chapter.<\/p>\n
The board's intervention was meant to end weeks of uncertainty
\nsurrounding the election of the new chapter chairman, which had
\nbeen marred by open conflict between the rival camps.<\/p>\n
It dashed Latief Pudjosakti's hopes for re-election.
\nFrustrated by PDI chairperson Megawati Soekarnoputri's
\nintervention, he has formed a rival local board of executives, in
\nwhich he elected himself chairman.<\/p>\n
The crisis rocked the minority party after last month's
\nelection in the East Java city of Malang won by Sucipto was
\nannulled because the number of ballots cast was four more than
\nthat of number of eligible voters.<\/p>\n
Sucipto is an ardent supporter of Megawati, while Latief is
