E. Java dominates archery in National Games<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): East Java wrapped up its winning run in the
\narchery competition at the 14th National Games yesterday with an
\nOlympic round gold medal.<\/p>\n
The East Java men's trio of Hariyono, Hendra Setijawan and
\nGatot Arianto teamed up well to beat their North Sumatran
\ncounterparts of Hendra Wijaya, Wilson Pane and Hairul Azhar 227-
\n210 for the gold, the 14th won by the traditional archery
\npowerhouse.<\/p>\n
The host team, featuring Ditto Rembrandt, Wahyu Hidayat and
\nTri Prasetyo, grabbed the bronze after beating the Jambi team of
\nSyafruddin Mawi, Nurniawan and Rido Kencana, 222-211.<\/p>\n
Earlier in the day, East Kalimantan, powered by Indonesia's
\nOlympians Dahliana and Hamdiah, proved too much for the
\nopposition in the women's Olympic round.<\/p>\n
East Kalimantan downed East Java, including former Olympian
\nLilies Handayani, 225-217 in the final.<\/p>\n
The bronze went to Lampung, which fielded another Olympic
\nveteran, Purnama Pandiangan, alongside Yuliasih and Fitrizal
\nIriani, after defeating Central Java 230-221.<\/p>\n
Following the concluding day of the archery competition
\nyesterday, East Java had proved its domination of the 32 gold-
\nmedal events. In addition to its 14 golds, the province took 12
\nsilvers and six bronzes.<\/p>\n
West Java came a distant second with three golds, five silvers
\nand two bronzes, beating East Kalimantan, which also won three
\ngolds but fewer other medals. The Kalimantan side managed just
\none silver and four bronzes.<\/p>\n
Shooting<\/p>\n
Also yesterday, the Senayan shooting range was a magnet of
\npublic attention, with people eager to watch President Soeharto's
\nson Bambang Trihatmodjo demonstrate his skills in the center fire
\npistol event.<\/p>\n
Bambang, owner of the country's Bimantara Group, was making
\nhis Games debut for North Sulawesi.<\/p>\n
Wearing his contingent's yellow jacket uniform, Bambang was
\nthe focus of overwhelming exposure from cameramen and
\nphotographers. Playing under the full glare of public scrutiny, a
\nnervous Bambang finished a lowly 14th despite having the support
\nof his wife Halimah.<\/p>\n
Bambang, who also owns Bimantara Shooting Club, scored 528
\npoints out of a maximum 600, 24 less than his best score during
\npractice.<\/p>\n
\"I was too nervous because many journalists were waiting for
\nme,\" a smiling Bambang said. \"It was a very bad result and I was
\ndisappointed,\" he added.<\/p>\n
Bambang, who spends his spare time shooting, swimming and
\ndiving said that shooting helps him relax after his daily
\nbusiness activities.<\/p>\n
Maj. Gen. Sutiyoso, chief of the Jakarta Military Command, was
\nalso present, in his capacity as executive chairman of the
\nIndonesian Target Shooting Association, to support Bambang.<\/p>\n
Iriantoni of Jakarta won the gold medal with 573 points,
\nbeating East Javan's Idsyam Kaplale by just one point. Another
\nJakartan Alfian Sitompul bagged the bronze with 569.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Central Java swept both the men's and women's air
\nrifle hunting gold medals, the other competitions staged
\nyesterday.<\/p>\n
Shilian Prasastimade scored 353 points to triumph in the
\nwomen's event. Kadar Winarti from West Java finished second with
\n348 points, followed by another Central Javanese markswoman
\nTheodora Dasantari who collected 341.<\/p>\n
Bagus Harjono Bonie Central won the men's event with 528
\npoints. Yuni Andre of West Java came a distant second with 519
\npoints, ahead of I Gede Mertayasa from Bali who scored 518. (yan)<\/p>\n
