Jakarta mayoralty plans to have more public parks<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The East Jakarta mayoralty plans to build six<br>\n500-square-meter parks, the mayor said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Sudarsono said the parks would be in the Pulogadung,<br>\nJatinegara, Matraman and Duren Sawit districts. Duren Sawit will<br>\nhave three parks.<\/p>\n<p>These will be Taman Segi Tiga Duren Sawit, Taman Pondok Kelapa<br>\nBarat, and Taman Lembah Lontar.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday Governor Surjadi Soedirdja said the city planned to<br>\ngradually increase its green space from 18,179.68 hectares to<br>\nreach 26,450.40 hectares, or 40 percent of the city's 656<br>\nhectares which is considered ideal.<\/p>\n<p>In Pulogadung area the park to be called Taman Jalan was will<br>\nbe in Puloasem. In Jatinegara, the park will be called Taman<br>\nJalur Hijau Daun. The Matraman park will be called Taman Galur<br>\nSari.<\/p>\n<p>In October, Mayor Sudarsono ordered all residents of the<br>\nlocations to move. Residents around the Taman Jalur Hijau Daun<br>\nsite resisted, but the others did not.<\/p>\n<p>Sudarsono justified the evictions on 1988 public order rule<br>\nnumber 11 which banned land use without the owners' permission.<\/p>\n<p>The mayor said \"the lands were owned by the state.\"<\/p>\n<p>More than 80 families will be affected.<\/p>\n<p>Thirteen families living on Jalur Hijau Daun street,<br>\nJatinegara subdistrict complained of low compensation.<\/p>\n<p>They occupy one neighborhood covering more than 500 square<br>\nmeters.<\/p>\n<p>\"The mayoralty only offered Rp 500,000 (US$210) to each<br>\nfamily,\" said Sunarto, 52, the head of Jalur Hijau Daun<br>\nneighborhood.<\/p>\n<p>He said residents demanded Rp 300,000 per square meter.<\/p>\n<p>Five people had accepted the mayoralty's compensation offer<br>\nbut eight had refused, Sunarto said.<\/p>\n<p>The eight people asked the Jakarta Legal Aid Institute (LBH)<br>\nfor legal representation.<\/p>\n<p>Lawyer Waskito Adiribowo, who heads the Institute's land and<br>\nenvironment division said the mayor should have announced a list<br>\nof every family who had to leave the site.<\/p>\n<p>In the absence of such a list, \"It has made the legal process<br>\neven more difficult,\" Waskito said.<\/p>\n<p>LBH lawyers also criticized officials' legal interpretations<br>\nin justifying evictions.<\/p>\n<p>Sunarto, the neighborhood chief in Jatinegara, said about 100<br>\nof the mayoralty's public order officers came to demolish houses<br>\nlast month But agreed not to until after Idul Fitri next month.<\/p>\n<p>\"But the problem of compensation has not been settled since,\"<br>\nhe said.
