Dysentery hits Madura, 17 treated<\/p>\n
BANGKALAN, Madura: Following a dengue outbreak, a dysentery
\noutbreak has hit Bangkalan district in Madura island. At least 17
\npeople, mostly children, were treated at Bangkalan General
\nHospital on Monday.<\/p>\n
The 17 people, 13 of them children, were suffering from
\ndehydration and their condition was very weak.<\/p>\n
Director of Bangkalan General Hospital, Dr. Heru Ariyadi,
\nconfirmed that some areas in Bangkalan were affected, but it was
\ntoo early to declare an emergency in the area.<\/p>\n
"The condition is still not alarming yet, but the spread of
\ndysentery must be controlled," he said.<\/p>\n
He explained that the increase in the cases of dysentery on
\nthe island was largely attributed to the change in seasons, from
\nwet to dry.<\/p>\n
The weather reduced the amount and quality of fresh water in
\nthe area.<\/p>\n
He urged local residents to only drink boiled water and if
\nthey had diarrhea to immediately consume rehydration salts or
\ndrink warm lime juice, with a little salt added.<\/p>\n
