        "content": "<p>Dwindling mangrove forests<\/p>\n<p>President Soeharto has warned that any further plans to<br>\nexploit our mangrove forests needs to be thoroughly considered<br>\nbecause many of our mangrove forests have already disappeared as<br>\na result of uncontrolled development of coastal areas. The<br>\nPresident further called on the community and the government to<br>\nwork together towards rehabilitating those damaged mangrove<br>\nforests as soon as possible.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is indeed of real concern to us because it affects<br>\nmany of our provinces. Of the 12.9 million hectares of mangrove<br>\nforests that existed a few decades ago only about 3.1 million<br>\nhectares are now left. Experts meanwhile say that mangrove<br>\nforests are of vital importance to coastal ecosystems. Apart from<br>\nconstituting a valuable resource they also function to protect<br>\nthe ecosystems that lie farther inland, for instance by<br>\npreventing abrasion of the coastlines. In addition they play an<br>\nimportant role as protected spawning and breeding grounds for<br>\nfish and shrimps.<\/p>\n<p>More substantial efforts to protect our mangrove forests must<br>\nbe made by local administrations in areas with coastal towns and<br>\ncities.<\/p>\n<p>-- Suara Karya, Jakarta<\/p>",
