Dutch premier Ruud Lubbers slated to begin visit today<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Dutch Prime Minister Ruud Lubbers is scheduled
\nto arrive here today for a four day state visit at the invitation
\nof President Soeharto, marking the first high-level encounter in
\nJakarta since Indonesia unilaterally ended all Dutch aid in 1992.<\/p>\n
During his stay here, Lubbers, who is accompanied by Foreign
\nMinister P.H. Kooijmans, will discuss with Soeharto the
\nimprovement and expansion of bilateral relations between the two
\ncountries, officials in Jakarta say.<\/p>\n
Lubbers is also scheduled to make a courtesy call on Vice-
\nPresident Try Sutrisno, Speaker of the House of Representatives
\nWahono and other cabinet ministers.<\/p>\n
This will be Lubbers' second trip as prime minister to
\nIndonesia after previously visiting the country in 1988. It could
\nalso mark his last in his capacity as he is expected to
\nrelinquish the post at the end of his term next month.<\/p>\n
Relations between the two governments were severely marred
\nwhen on March 25, 1992, the Indonesian government ceased all
\nDutch development aid on the grounds that The Hague was using its
\nassistance to meddle in Indonesia's domestic affairs.<\/p>\n
The cessation of Dutch aid also meant the formation of a new
\ndevelopmental aid foundation called the Consultative Group on
\nIndonesia (CGI) replacing the Inter Governmental Group on
\nIndonesia (IGGI) which was presided by the Netherlands.<\/p>\n
The Paris based CGI, incorporates all the IGGI member
\ncountries except for Holland.<\/p>\n
Tomorrow, Lubbers will attend a luncheon hosted by the
\nIndonesia-Netherlands Association followed by a dinner with the
\nDutch community on Wednesday evening hosted by Ambassador
\nJ.H.R.D. Van Roijen.<\/p>\n
Other scheduled activities while in Jakarta will be a visit to
\nthe Hero's cemetery at Kalibata and the Dutch war hero's cemetery
\nat Menteng Pulo.<\/p>\n
Included in Lubbers four-day itinerary here is a visit to
\nSurabaya on Wednesday to meet with East Java governor Basofi
\nSudirman and the laying of the initial stone for the new
\nPhillips-Ralin factory.<\/p>\n
Foreign Minister Kooijmans is expected to sign an investment
\nprotection agreement with his counterpart Ali Alatas at the
\nPancasila building in Jakarta during the visit. (07)
