Dutch foreign minister here on two-day visit<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Dutch foreign minister Jozias Van Aartsen
\narrived here for a two-day visit on Sunday evening to acquaint
\nhimself with Indonesia's new Cabinet and to seek clarification on
\nthe ongoing violence in Maluku.<\/p>\n
\"The visit is to get acquainted with the new government and
\ndiscuss what will be the future of the relationship of the two
\ncountries,\" Anne Van Leeuwen, the first secretary for press and
\ncultural affairs of the Dutch Embassy here, said earlier this
\nweek.<\/p>\n
Van Aartsen will meet Indonesian foreign minister Alwi Shihab
\non Monday morning and later with Vice President Megawati
\nSoekarnoputri. On Tuesday afternoon Van Aartsen will also meet
\nwith President Abdurrahman Wahid.<\/p>\n
Other officials whom he is due to meet are Coordinating
\nMinister for Political Affairs and Security Gen. Wiranto,
\nMinister of Defense Juwono Sudarsono, Attorney General Marzuki
\nDarusman, People's Consultative Assembly Speaker Amien Rais and
\nHouse of Representatives Speaker Akbar Tandjung.<\/p>\n
\"In those meetings, minister Jozias will also have a
\ndiscussion about the situation in Maluku province, which concerns
\nmany parties in the Netherlands,\" Anne said.<\/p>\n
As Indonesia's former colonial ruler, the Netherlands
\ncontinues to have a vested, if not historical, interest in
\ndevelopments here.<\/p>\n
Large numbers of supporters of the separatist South Maluku
\nRepublic (RMS) rebellion fled to Holland after their uprising was
\ncrushed in the 1960s and 1970s.<\/p>\n
Before he leaves Jakarta, Van Aartsen will pay homage to
\ndeceased Dutch soldiers buried at the Menteng Pulo Cemetery in
