A Jakarta motorcyclist has required emergency room treatment for respiratory distress as dust and vehicle pollution intensify during the dry season. The patient reported using a nebuliser due to narrowed airways, with doctors linking the condition to the capital's worsening air quality. The individual admitted to often neglecting mask use on short trips, while also noting the need for increased sunscreen application due to more intense heat compared to previous years.

The midday sun was scorching. The asphalt reflected heat, while dust
and vehicle exhaust mixed on the capital’s roads. For residents who
depend on motorcycles for their daily mobility, the dry season is not
just about hotter weather, but also a threat to health.

This was felt by a motorcyclist, Naufal, 28, a private sector
employee whose daily activities involve moving from one location to
another in Jakarta. Recently, he even had to undergo treatment in the
emergency department (ED) due to respiratory problems.

“I had to use a nebuliser because of narrowing of the airways. The ED
doctor said it was likely influenced by Jakarta’s weather conditions,
especially since I have high mobility on the road,” he told Media
Indonesia on Tuesday (21/7).

He admitted to rarely using a mask properly while riding, especially
when only travelling short distances. This habit meant he was more
frequently exposed to dust and street pollution.

“If the distance is short, I usually tend to be careless. Even though
a mask could probably reduce exposure to dust and pollution,” he
said.

As the dry season sets in, he has increasingly felt the change in
weather. According to him, Jakarta’s heat this year is more intense than
the previous year.

“Last year, I felt it still rained often. Now it’s hotter. The heat
is really intense, plus the air is humid. My body feels sticky all the
time when I’m on the road,” he said.

As a motorcyclist, finding shade becomes the preferred option when
the sun is directly overhead.

“When I’m on the motorbike, I just want to find a shady spot. Stop
under a tree for a moment before continuing the journey,” he said.

To reduce the impact of sun exposure, Naufal said he is disciplined
about using sunscreen. This year, he even started carrying sunscreen
spray so he can reapply it between activities.

“I always wear sunscreen when I leave. Now I also carry a spray, so
after a few work stops, I spray it on my hands and face again before
continuing my journey,” he explained.

According to him, sunscreen use this year is much more frequent than
last year.

“Last year I didn’t use it as much as now. Because back then it
rained more often. This year the weather is much hotter, so I use it
more often,” he said.
",
