Dumping trash at the German embassy<\/p>\n
The dumping of plastic trash, which was allegedly imported by
\na German company, in the front yard of the German embassy in
\nJakarta by a number of scavengers recently was a very shameful
\nact. It reflected people's ignorance of import procedures and the
\ncustoms office operation.<\/p>\n
If the allegations that it was imported by an Indonesian
\nimporter and approved by the customs office in Tanjung Priok are
\ntrue, the culprits who deserve to have garbage thrown at them are
\nthe importer and customs, not the German embassy.<\/p>\n
A number of things need to be straightened out.<\/p>\n
First, the German language on the trash does not necessarily
\nmean that it came from Germany. This needs rechecking.<\/p>\n
Second, could an exporter abroad send illegal goods here
\nwithout the help of an Indonesian importer and the approval of
\nthe customs office?<\/p>\n
It is our hope that the German embassy will not construe the
\nactions of the scavengers as representing the attitude of the
\nIndonesian people.<\/p>\n
