Dumai council dismisses speaker in plenary session<\/p>\n

The Dumai regency legislative council in the province of Riau
\ndismissed its speaker, Benedi Boiman, amid a veil of secrecy
\nduring a plenary session on Friday.<\/p>\n
The dismissal follows a no-confidence motion issued by
\ncouncillors against the speaker for failing to bolster \"good
\nrelations\" between him and other legislators.<\/p>\n
\"Based on that, we agreed early January to convene a plenary
\nsession today (Friday) to remove Benedi Boiman,\" Ali Rahman,
\nsecretary of the Golkar faction at the council, told Antara.<\/p>\n
He refused to comment on the no-confidence motion.<\/p>\n
Ali said most factions, including the two largest ones, namely
\nthe Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan) and
\nGolkar, endorsed Benedi's dismissal.<\/p>\n
\"Four factions have declared that Benedi Boiman be dismissed.
\nTherefore, he is no longer the chairman of the Dumai legislative
\ncouncil,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Only the Indonesian Military\/National Police faction abstained
\nfrom voting, while the United Development Party (PPP) faction
\nwalked out of the session, he added.<\/p>\n
Ali could not say when the council would elect its speaker
\nafter Benedi was forced to relinquish his top post.<\/p>\n
Before the council gets its new speaker, the three current
\ndeputies will take charge of the legislature, he said.<\/p>\n
Friday's plenary session was closed to the public with at
\nleast 22 of the 25 council members present.<\/p>",
