DTK members to start work Tuesday<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Fifteen members of the City Transportation Council
\n(DTK) will be installed on Jan. 11.<\/p>\n
The council will act as the people's representatives in
\nproviding advice to the city's transportation-related policies.<\/p>\n
The members come from various backgrounds ranging from bus
\nowners, transportation businesspeople, public transportation
\nusers, non-governmental organization activists and traffic
\npolicemen.<\/p>\n
D.A. Rini, one of the council members from the City
\nTransportation Agency, said on Friday that the office of the
\ncouncil will be located at City Hall.<\/p>\n
Tulus Abadi of the Indonesian Consumers Foundation (YLKI)
\nexpressed hope that the council would become a think tank for
\nSutiyoso's administration.<\/p>\n
YLKI chairwoman Indah Suksmaningsih is a council member.<\/p>\n
\"YLKI will be the first to walk out of the council if the
\nadministration misuses the council to justify its policies,\"

JAKARTA: Central Jakarta Mayor Muhayat said on Friday that his
\noffice would evict hundreds of street vendors occupying the
\nroadside of Jl. Fachruddin in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta on
\nMonday.<\/p>\n
\"We only allowed 60 vendors to operate there in the wake of
\nthe 1997 economic crisis. Now, hundreds of street vendors are
\nthere causing traffic jams. That's why we plan to evict them this
\nyear,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He said 60 kiosks have been set up at nearby markets, while
\nunregistered vendors would not receive any compensation.--JP.<\/p>\n

TANGERANG: An official revealed on Thursday that hundreds of
\nbillboards at the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport compound
\nare illegal.<\/p>\n
\"We never issued a permit for the billboards or the
\nadvertisement tax from either the airport operator PT Angkasa
\nPura II or the billboard owners,\" Said Hendro Wijayanto, head of
\nparks department at the Tangerang Spatial and Building Layout
\nAgency, explained.<\/p>\n
There are at least 2,000 neon box billboards at the airport,
\nand 1,540 of them are illegal, he added.<\/p>\n
He said the illegal billboards has caused the administration
\nRp 500 million (US$5,617) in losses, threatening to take them
\ndown should the airport management keep on ignoring the warning.<\/p>\n
Head of the airport administrative unit Untung Rahayu said the
\nairport was not responsible.<\/p>\n
\"We just facilitate the billboards ... the tax and the permit
\nshould be taken care of by the billboard owners themselves,\" he
