Drunk policeman shoots watchman<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A police officer shot to death a security guard
\nin a discotheque in North Jakarta early yesterday morning.
\nReportedly, both men were heavily intoxicated at the time.<\/p>\n
The officer, identified as Sgt. Popang, was a member of the
\nWest Jakarta police precinct and was arrested by the military
\npolice, according to Lt. Col. Latief Rabar, a spokesman for City
\nPolice.<\/p>\n
Latief said the sergeant was in police custody and undergoing
\nintensive examination.<\/p>\n
It was reported that the sergeant had gone on a drinking spree
\nwith the security guard Ali Nurdin alias Cholik, 34, at 1 a.m. at
\nthe "Top Hit" discotheque, located on the third story of the
\nthree-story Robinson store building in Penjaringan, West Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Cholik, who lived on Jl. Jembatan Gambang, Penjaringan, was a
\nsecurity guard of the department store.<\/p>\n
Eyewitnesses say that the sergeant and the guard, both out of
\nuniform, went out for some air sometime in the course of their
\ndrinking.<\/p>\n
As the sergeant was lying on a bench on the front yard, Cholik
\njoked with him, patting him on his cheek.<\/p>\n
Cholik kept on joking despite strong protests from the
\ninfuriated sergeant, who at last threatened to shoot him if he
\ncontinued.<\/p>\n
The two men then entered into an altercation, but people at
\nthe bar calmed them down and told Cholik to leave.<\/p>\n
Cholik left but returned a few minutes later.<\/p>\n
The sergeant, still infuriated, drew his revolver and shot
\nCholik once in the head as he approached him.<\/p>\n
Cholik died on the way to the nearby hospital while an angry
\ncrowd, who were believed to be Cholik's friends, beat up the
\nsergeant soon after the incident.<\/p>\n
After the beating, the military police were informed of the
\nincident. They arrived on the scene soon afterward and arrested
\nthe sergeant, confiscating his firearm. (jsk)<\/p>",
