Drunk cop allegedly shoots two<\/p>\n

An intoxicated police officer, identified as Brig. Irwanto, 34,
\nallegedly shot two street vendors on Jl. Fatmawati in South
\nJakarta early on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
City police spokesman Sr. Comr. I Ketut Untung Yoga Ana said
\nthat Abdul Haris, 22, was shot in the shoulder and Achmad Rai,
\n18, was grazed in the temple when Irwanto opened fire at about
\n3:30 a.m.<\/p>\n
He said the two were taken to the nearby Fatmawati Hospital in
\nSouth Jakarta and were in stable condition.<\/p>\n
\"We have detained Irwanto at South Jakarta Police Headquarters
\nfor questioning. We will charge him under the articles on assault
\nin the Criminal Code, as well as under the police code of
\nethics,\" Ketut said.<\/p>\n
He said Irwanto could be fired or demoted if found guilty of
\nany of the charges.<\/p>\n
Irwanto, who is with the Kebayoran Lama Police, and an
\nunidentified female companion reportedly stopped by Abdul's kiosk
\nto purchase a can of beer and an energy drink.<\/p>\n
For reasons that are still unknown, Irwanto broke a window in
\nthe kiosk before paying for the drink.<\/p>\n
When Achmad intervened to try and calm the officer, Irwanto
\npulled out his gun and fired a shot into the air before firing on
\nthe two street vendors.<\/p>\n
Ketut said Irwanto was not on duty when the incident occurred.<\/p>\n
He said the police had regulations governing when officers
\nwere allowed to discharge their weapons.<\/p>\n
\"They cannot use their guns if their lives are not in danger
\nor if they are not on duty,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Despite these regulations, there have been a number of
\nquestionable officer-involved shootings of late.<\/p>\n
Two months ago, a police officer opened fire inside a cafe in
\nNorth Jakarta after his credit card was rejected by an employee.
\nAnother officer fired a shot into the ceiling of a discotheque in
\nCengkareng, West Jakarta.<\/p>",
