Drug trader shot for resisting arrest<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Police shot on Sunday a bird trader who
\nallegedly also sold drugs in North Jakarta, after resisting
\narrest, a senior officer said.<\/p>\n
The suspect, suffering a leg injury, was identified as
\nSugiyanto, a resident of Sungai Bambu in Tanjung Priok in North
\nJakarta, said the officer of a local police sub-precinct, who
\nasked not to be named.<\/p>\n
\"He was shot in his right leg and got medical treatment at
\nnearby Koja Hospital,\" the officer said. Sugiyanto was reportedly
\nshot as he tried to flee from police.<\/p>\n
After Sugiyanto's arrest, police also apprehended seven other
\npeople, believed to be the suspect's accomplices.<\/p>\n
\"The seven are believed to specialize in selling marijuana in
\ndiscotheques and other entertainment spots,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Police confiscated two packages from Sugiyanto, containing
\nfour kilograms of marijuana with an estimated street value of
\nmore than Rp 20 million (US$2,352).<\/p>\n
Police said Sugiyanto admitted to starting the illegal
\nbusiness early this year after his bird trade drastically
\ndeclined. He was detained at Tanjung Priok police station for
\nfurther investigation.<\/p>\n
Police said Sugiyanto's arrest was made after a tip-off from
\nlocal residents who were suspicious of his business activities.<\/p>\n
\"We then sent our detectives to check Sugiyanto's strange
\nbusiness,\" he said, adding that the police then learned that
\nSugiyanto's house was used to store shipments of marijuana from
\nSumatra.<\/p>\n
After the police raid on the house, \"when we discovered the
\npackages contained marijuana, Sugiyanto tried to run away,\" the
\nofficer said.<\/p>\n
He said police shot Sugiyanto when he ignored their warning
