A Malaysia Airlines pilot, Mohd Saufi bin Othman (39), was arrested\nfor allegedly smuggling more than 26 kg of drugs into Indonesia.\nMalaysian police have revealed that the suspect had been carrying out\nhis activities since 2024.<\/p>\n
Saufi bin Othman was arrested by customs authorities at Terminal 3 of\nSoekarno-Hatta International Airport on 28 July. He was found carrying\n26 kilograms of ecstasy. Customs authorities subsequently handed Saufi\nover to the Criminal Investigation Agency of the Indonesian National\nPolice for legal processing.<\/p>\n
During questioning, it emerged that Saufi tested positive for three\ntypes of drugs. He also admitted to having smuggled drugs into Indonesia\nthree times and received payment of 50,000 ringgit (approximately Rp\n218.7 million) from an individual.<\/p>\n
According to Malaysia\u2019s Harian Metro, the Director of the Narcotics\nCrime Investigation Department of Bukit Aman, Datuk Hussein Omar Khan,\nsaid the suspect had been involved in the activity for a long time. \u201cThe\nsuspect has been involved since 2024, with his role being to transport\ndrugs abroad to several destinations according to his flight schedule.\nThis is not the first time because he has brought drugs to several\ncountries on several occasions,\u201d Omar said on Saturday (15\/8).<\/p>\n
Police have also received information about drug syndicates operating\nin Malaysia and other countries, including Indonesia. \u201cThe pilot has\nalso provided information about several drug syndicates operating in\nMalaysia and other countries, including Indonesia,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Hussein said the Royal Malaysia Police would investigate identified\nsyndicate members, including money flows linked to drug sales, while\ninformation about international networks would be shared with law\nenforcement agencies in the countries involved. \u201cInterrogation found no\nindication of insider involvement at KLIA. This means he acted alone\nwhen passing through checks, and this matter needs to be examined\nfurther to determine how the drugs went undetected,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Hussein said the pilot remains in the custody of the Indonesian\nNational Police and must undergo legal proceedings in Indonesia. He\ndeclined to comment on the possibility of extradition to Malaysia.<\/p>\n
The 39-year-old pilot was arrested at Soekarno-Hatta International\nAirport in Banten on 29 July, after arriving from Kuala Lumpur on flight\nMH727. Indonesian customs officers detected suspicious contents in his\nluggage through an X-ray scan at around 11.30 pm local time. A search\nfound 14 packages containing 70,114 ecstasy pills weighing approximately\n25 kg, along with 4 grams of methamphetamine in his cabin baggage.
