Drug abuse up among children<\/p>\n
MANADO, North Sulawesi: Increasing drug abuse now includes
\nchildren as young as seven years old, according to the National
\nNarcotics Agency (BNN).<\/p>\n
BNN Head Insp. Gen. Togar Sianipar said on Sunday that it was
\nfound that several elementary school students, aged seven in
\nNorth Sulawesi had been arrested by police for drug abuse.<\/p>\n
"Parents must be aware of the latest developments in drug
\ntrafficking. Don't wait until kids become victims," Togar said at
\nan anti-drug workshop in Manado, North Sulawesi on Sunday.<\/p>\n
According to Togar, at least 7,000 junior high school students
\nand 10,000 high school students nationwide had been identified as
\ndrug abusers.<\/p>\n
He also said that any police officer, prosecutor or other law
\nenforcer involved in drug trafficking would be punished, and

Police told not to overact<\/p>\n
BANDUNG, West Java: National Police Chief General Da'i
\nBachtiar advised police officers on Saturday not to overact when
\nbeing filmed by television crews during operations against
\ncriminals.<\/p>\n
He also warned them against unlawfully exposing suspected
\ncriminals who have been captured, beating them up during
\noperations or being filmed while firing their weapons.<\/p>\n
"If you know of officers who have done these things, please
\ntell me. Take note of the police unit they come from," Da'i said
\nwhen giving directives to officers at the West Java regional
\npolice headquarters in Bandung.<\/p>\n
He said he gave the warning so that no police officers ignored
\noperational procedures. He said he hated seeing his men on
\ntelevision violating operational procedures when trying to
\ncapture crime suspects.<\/p>\n
Several television stations now regularly broadcast the
\npopular programs that show police raids against suspects.<\/p>\n
Da'i advised police chiefs at every level to immediately
\nremind their men that while informing the public about any
\nsuccess in their anti-crime operations, they should remain level-
\nheaded and not show the violent aspect of such operations.

\nAkbar mulls to run for presidency

Akbar eyes presidential run<\/p>\n
SURABAYA: Akbar Tandjung, the embattled chairman of Golkar
\nParty, said on Sunday that he would only run for president if he
\nhad accomplished certain things.<\/p>\n
He said that he first had to win the corruption case
\n(Buloggate) against him that was currently being examined by the
\nSupreme Court, then had to secure a victory for Golkar in the
\nlegislative elections in 2004 thereby placing as many Golkar rank
\nand file members as possible at regional legislatures (DPRDs) and
\nthe House of Representatives (DPR).<\/p>\n
A high profile corruption case involving the State Logistics
\nAgency (Bulog) remains a strong legal stumbling block for Akbar
\nand Golkar.<\/p>\n
"Pray for me so that I will be acquitted by the Supreme Court
\n(so that I can run for presidency)," Akbar told his supporters in
\nSurabaya.<\/p>\n
Akbar was sentenced to three years in jail by the Central
\nJakarta district court, the verdict was upheld by the Jakarta
\nHigh court for his role in a Rp 40 billion corruption case better
\nknown as Buloggate. He remains free pending appeal to the Supreme
\nCourt.<\/p>\n
Golkar will start selecting its presidential nominees in June
\nthis year, and will finally decide on its presidential candidate
\nby February next year to contest the country's first ever direct
\npresidential election due to take place between June and August
\n2004 after the legislative elections which could take place as

Labor agencies told to train recruits<\/p>\n
MEDAN, North Sumatra: Manpower and Transmigration Minister
\nJacob Nuwa Wea said labor recruitment agencies should be required
\nto train recruits before dispatching them abroad.<\/p>\n
"Indonesians seeking employment abroad must have specific
\nskills. That is why I ask each labor recruitment agency to enter
\nrecruits into training courses," he said after opening a
\ncoordination meeting of the provincial branches of the All-
\nIndonesia Labor Union (SPSI) here on Saturday.<\/p>\n
In addition to technical know-how, labor recruitment agencies
\nmust also provide recruits with foreign language skills,
\nparticularly English, he said.<\/p>\n
The ministry this month issued licenses to 62 labor
\nrecruitment agencies to send workers to the Middle East.<\/p>\n
The licenses were issued to the labor recruitment agencies
\nbased on certain criteria, such as owning a dormitory to
