BREBES, Central Java: The prolonged drought in Brebes regency,
\nCentral Java, is threatening shallot crops in northern villages.<\/p>\n
The bulbs are aged between 20 days and 30 days.<\/p>\n
Local farmers said water levels in the Senggom dam, which
\nholds water for irrigation, was low.<\/p>\n
Rosichin, 46, a senior grower from Sigamber village, told The
\nJakarta Post on Friday that he had to bribe gangs to allow him
\nand other farmers to get irrigation water.<\/p>\n
\"But after a group of local farmers reported the extortion to
\nlocal police and staged a protest at the Brebes legislative
\ncouncil recently, the water channels were again reopened to
\nirrigate the parched land,\" said Rosichin.<\/p>\n
Eko Pawito, head of the Brebes irrigation office, said the
\ndam's flow level had been reduced to only 2,200 liters per second
\nduring the dry season.<\/p>\n
He said his office also supplied water from the dam to

BENGKULU, Bengkulu: The provincial administration said on
\nSaturday it would stop illegal gold mining in protected forests,
\nincluding in Kerinci Seblat National Park, next year in order to
\nprevent further environmental damage.<\/p>\n
\"We are currently listing all miners in protected forests,\"
\nsaid Husnaini Nurdin, the head of general mining at the Bengkulu
\nmines and energy office.<\/p>\n
\"We aim to eliminate all illegal mining in protected forests
\nby 2004,\" he added.<\/p>\n
Nurdin acknowledged that illegal mining continued unchecked in
\nthe national park, located in Rejang Rebong regency.<\/p>\n
The unauthorized activities involve at least 172 families in
\nTambang Sawah village and 1,200 people in Tambang Talang Sawah
\nvillage, he said. He could not give an exact figure for illegal
\nminers in Katenong village.<\/p>\n
Illegal mining also occurs in other protected forests in North
\nBengkulu regency. Thousands of local residents depend on mining
\nfor a livelihood.<\/p>\n
He said his administration was considering relocating the
\nresidents or giving them start-up capital for new businesses

MAKASSAR, South Sulawesi: Bone regency administration in South
\nSulawesi plans to buy 42 new official cars, two buses, a fire
\ntruck and 240 motorcycles worth Rp 9.9 billion, officials said on
\nSaturday.<\/p>\n
Muhammad Ridwan, general affairs head at the administration,
\nsaid the money would come from the regency's 2003 budget.<\/p>\n
The Bone regent will receive a Nissan Terrano SUV and each of
\nthe 27 subdistrict heads will each get a Toyota Kijang van, he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Ridwan said the vehicles would replace official cars that were
\n10 years old. The move is to support the improvement of local
\nofficials' performance.<\/p>\n
Members of the Bone General Elections Commission and the Bone
\nElections Supervisory Committee as well local military officers
\nwill also be among the recipients of the official cars.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, at least 224 village heads will each receive
\nmotorcycles. Other recipients include five local police officers.<\/p>\n
Ridwan said his office would also buy two buses to pick up
\nlocal officials from and to their homes, and a fire truck that

YOGYAKARTA: The Bantul legislative council in Yogyakarta
\nprovince agreed on Saturday to accept the resignation of Deputy
\nRegent Totok Sudarto, who will stand for election as the
\nBondowoso regent in East Java.<\/p>\n
The deputy regent of Bantul, one of the country's poorest
\ndistricts, decided to resign to contest the regental election in
\nBondowoso for the 2004-2009 term. Totok was due to remain in
\noffice until next year.<\/p>\n
Totok and Bantul Regent Idham Samawi attended the council's
\nplenary session held to discuss the deputy regent's resignation.<\/p>\n
In his speech at the meeting, Totok expressed gratitude to all
\nofficials in Bantul for helping him carry out his state duties.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Idham told the session that he hoped Totok wins the
\nregental race in Bondowoso. It is unclear when the election will
