        "content": "<p>Drought dashes farmers' hope<\/p>\n<p>UJUNGPANDANG, South Sulawesi: The dry spell has severely<br>\naffected about 26,000 hectares of paddy fields in this province<br>\nand in Riau, officials said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>In South Sulawesi, at least 20,000 hectares of paddy fields,<br>\nor about 10 percent of the province's paddy crop, are drying out<br>\ndue to a water shortage, local public office chief Kusnaeni said.<\/p>\n<p>He said the worst hit were rice fields in the southern and<br>\nwestern coastal areas.<\/p>\n<p>But rice production in inner regencies like Bone, Sopeng,<br>\nWajo, Sidrap, Pinrang and Luwu would not be affected. \"Reservoirs<br>\nin the regencies have enough water to irrigate paddy fields until<br>\nDecember,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>The wet season is not due until after October, according to<br>\nthe Meteorology and Geophysics Agency's Jakarta office.<\/p>\n<p>South Sulawesi produced four tons of unhusked rice, or 20<br>\npercent of national product, in the latest harvest season.<\/p>\n<p>Kusnaeni said the current dry spell would cost farmers Rp 80<br>\nbillion (US$33 million).<\/p>\n<p>\"We mean to optimize irrigation pumps and rotate irrigation<br>\nwater supply,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Antara reported that drought also threatened about<br>\n6,000 hectares of paddy fields in Riau's regencies of Kampar,<br>\nIndragiri Hulu and Bengkalis although rains occurred earlier this<br>\nmonth.
