Driving in the rain<\/p>\n
"I'm driving in the rain, just driving in the rain, what a
\nhorrible feeling, it's jam-time again."<\/p>\n
These aren't exactly the words used by Gene Kelly in that epic
\nsong sung years ago, but they did reflect the traffic chaos which
\nensued on Tuesday Nov. 29 after 4 p.m. in Jakarta.<\/p>\n
So many words have been written about macet (traffic jam) in
\nThe Jakarta Post in the past but nothing changes really. These
\njams on Tuesday, especially in South Jakarta, personally seemed
\nto be "the mother of all jams" -- to coin a familiar phrase. Many
\nunfortunate people surely can't have reached home until extremely
\nlate that night, no doubt feeling thoroughly exhausted, mentally
\nand physically.<\/p>\n
Why do the first heavy rains cause these problems to drivers?
\nMaybe these two points are partly responsible:<\/p>\n
(a) An assortment of young men who control vital junctions
\nblowing whistles willy nilly.<\/p>\n
(b) The lack of discipline and patience of some drivers.<\/p>\n
If this is only the beginning of the rainy season, I shudder
\nto think of what will happen when the rains come in earnest.<\/p>\n
Personally, I think I will don a stout pair of boots and with
\nmy golf umbrella walk and keep fit. It's far quicker under the
\ncircumstances and certainly a lot healthier. There wouldn't be
\nany meter to watch idly ticking over either, as I would not be
\ntrapped in a motionless taxi!<\/p>\n
