Allow me, please, to augment Tim G. Babcock's July 4 Noise
\nletter with the following:<\/p>\n
What can he possibly mean: \"By itself the Walls Ice cream
\njingle might not be so bad...\"<\/p>\n
Is Mr. Babcock mad or hard of hearing? It's gnawing into our
\nbrains! The Walls Ice cream phenomenon is a foreign electronic
\nintrusion. An outrage to the Indonesian people and an insult to
\nthe integrity of the repertoire of sounds which help make
\nIndonesia so special.<\/p>\n
One doesn't find these nasty things in the Walls home
\nterritory for the simple reason that the Australian public
\nwouldn't tolerate them. Easy though for the company to operate in
\npublic-passive Indonesia. But if there is a single person among
\nIndonesia's almost 200 million people who doesn't find the
\nincessant Walls jingle disagreeable then I would be very
\nsurprised.<\/p>\n
Indonesia is undergoing something of a cultural awareness
\nrevolution, promoting all things Indonesian. Hotel names are
\nchanged from English, etc. One wonders how Walls' mindless jingle
\nfits into this scheme. But it does smell of big business and that
\ncomes with its own rules.<\/p>\n
There's no need to pussyfoot about \"evanescence\" and
\n\"triviality.\" The problem is serious and without unified action
\nit will not go away.<\/p>\n
Thank you, Mr. Babcock, for raising the subject. And while
\nyou're at it, please find space to pity the sad individuals who
\nare dressed up like barber poles and condemned to push these
\nodious Walls carts. It sort of completes the indignation.<\/p>\n
