Drivers' strike paralyzes Padang<\/p>\n
PADANG, West Sumatra: A strike over prices staged by public
\ntransportation drivers paralyzed the provincial capital on Monday
\nand stranded thousands of students.<\/p>\n
The strike coincided with the cancellation of a meeting
\nplanned by the West Sumatra provincial council to elect a
\nreplacement for Muchlis Ibrahim, who resigned as governor last
\nTuesday.<\/p>\n
A few members of the council appeared at the local legislature
\nto inform the legislators of the change in plans. The council has
\nrejected the government's appointment of D. Dunidja as caretaker
\npending an election by local legislators and expected to name a
\nnative for the gubernatorial job.<\/p>\n
In a related development, Muchlis said he would fly to Jakarta
\non Wednesday to visit the Ministry of Home Affairs to pick up a
\nletter accepting his resignation.<\/p>\n
Muchlis resigned in protest of the government's choice of
\nZainal Bakar as his deputy instead of his favorite, Nurmawan.<\/p>\n
Later in the day, hundreds of striking drivers gathered at the
\nlegislature to channel their demands for lower prices for spare
