Drivers protest added minivans, illegal levies<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Hundreds of North Jakarta minivan drivers have
\nprotested to the National Commission on Human Rights against an
\nincrease of minivans in the area.<\/p>\n
Four hundred drivers said Tuesday the increase was excessive
\nand threatened their livelihood. They also reported daily levies
\nof almost Rp 5,000.<\/p>\n
Following a strike Monday, drivers met A.A. Baramuli, a member
\nof the commission.<\/p>\n
A statement signed by Jumarno, representing the drivers, said
\nthere have been 20 to 25 minivans operating from Tanjung Priok to
\nKota since February.<\/p>\n
Jumarno said there were now 120 minivans plying the route
\npassing Kampung Bandan and 100 minivans operating on the same
\nroute passing through Mangga Dua.<\/p>\n
The drivers said there were still plans to add more minivans.<\/p>\n
Route permits are issued by the City's Land Transport Agency,
\nand are based on surveys prior to the issuance of permits.<\/p>\n
\"We have complained to the head of Tanjung Priok terminal
\nabout the excessive number of minivans operating on both routes,\"
\nJumarno said.<\/p>\n
He said they had complained in vain to the head of the
\nterminal and to the cooperative which owned the additional
\nminivans, Komilet Jaya.<\/p>\n
Drivers also said daily levies collected by cooperative
\nofficials reached Rp 4,700.<\/p>\n
They said the cooperative claimed Rp 3,000 per day for
\ndrivers' benefits, Rp 200 to pay police officers at the terminal,
\nRp 500 to the Land Transportation Agency officers and Rp 1,000 to
\nother police officers.<\/p>\n
\"We demand a stop to the addition of minivans and the
\ncollection of illegal levies,\" the statement said.<\/p>\n
Baramuli said he would urge the North Jakarta Mayor and the
\nchief of the North Jakarta police precinct to investigate the
\ndrivers' complaints.<\/p>\n
\"If the report was true, the commission would consider there
\nwas a violation of human rights on the freedom to earn a decent
