Dr. Budiman needs special attention, a doctor warn<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A psychologist spent long hours with abortion
\nsuspect Dr. Budiman to help restore his \"will to live\" after he
\nallegedly attempted suicide at Jakarta Police Headquarters.<\/p>\n
Budiman was moved to Kramat Jati Police Hospital in East
\nJakarta yesterday afternoon, after being taken to Mintohardjo
\nNavy Hospital in Central Jakarta on Wednesday afternoon suffering
\nfrom severe blood loss from slashed wrists.<\/p>\n
Police said Budiman attempted suicide during a questioning
\nsession at police headquarters.<\/p>\n
Budiman is one of 14 people arrested on suspicion of being
\ninvolved in illegal abortions.<\/p>\n
A doctor at the Navy hospital warned police yesterday to
\nanticipate the possibility of Budiman making another suicide
\nattempt.<\/p>\n
\"A person who fails one suicide attempt might very soon try
\nagain.\"<\/p>\n
He said that investigating police should take special care of
\nBudiman because of his depression.<\/p>\n
\"One doctor had been assigned especially to encourage him,\"
\nthe doctor, who asked for anonymity, said.<\/p>\n
But he questioned the police's decision to let Budiman's wife
\nand children visit him yesterday. \"It might just worsen his
\ndepression.\"<\/p>\n
Budiman, 50, an obstetric and gynecological doctor, was said
\nto be in better physical condition yesterday after surgery on
\nWednesday afternoon which lasted one hour.<\/p>\n
Improved<\/p>\n
The head of the Navy hospital, Col. W. Setiawan, said
\nyesterday that Budiman's physical condition had improved but his
\nmental condition \"still needs a lot of improvement\".<\/p>\n
Budiman was treated by a team of health professionals
\nconsisting of Setiawan, another surgeon, an intern, a
\npsychologist and an anesthetist.<\/p>\n
Setiawan said police might have to wait \"quite a long time\"
\nbefore Budiman was able to help them with their investigation.<\/p>\n
\"Psychically, he may start to regain strength in 10 days as
\nthe wounds gradually heal.<\/p>\n
\"But I can't say this for his mental condition. In this case,
\nthe improvement will very much rely on the patient himself. It
\ntakes longer for a person to recover from depression than from
\nphysical weakness,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Detective Maj. Benny Mamoto, who escorted Budiman to Kramat
\nJati yesterday, said his office also wanted Budiman to recover.<\/p>\n
\"At the moment, we'll focus more on the suspect's recovery and
\nlater proceed with our questioning of him,\" Benny said.<\/p>\n
A police source said that Budiman, who was a major and served
\nin the Armed Forces for 10 years, lives in Pamulang Permai
\nhousing estate in Tangerang, West Java, with his wife and
\nchildren.<\/p>\n
A former police general, Maj. Gen. Koesparmono Irsan, said
\nyesterday that Budiman's apparent suicide attempt had not
\nimproved his position as a suspect in the police investigation.<\/p>\n
Koesparmono, who is now a member of the National Commission on
\nHuman Rights, was asked to comment on the alleged attempt.<\/p>\n
Police have said that they suspect Budiman provided illegal
\nabortions at the Fajar Pengharapan and Amalia clinics in Central
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
The chief of Jakarta Police Detectives, Col. Gories Mere, said
\nWednesday that his office expected to start questioning several
\nwomen yesterday who had allegedly had abortions at the two
\nclinics.<\/p>\n
He said the names of the woman were obtained from confiscated
\nclinic admission books.<\/p>\n
However, detectives could not confirm yesterday that they had
\nsummoned or questioned any of the women. (aan\/cst)<\/p>",
