        "content": "<p>Jakarta \u2014 Deputy Speaker Lamhot Sinaga of Commission VII of the\nIndonesian House of Representatives emphasised the need for government\ninvolvement in reviving the national film industry by making film a new\neconomic instrument. \u2018We in Commission VII are now committed to making\nfilm this new economic instrument. Imagine if film could be used as a\nnew economic instrument, perhaps our APBN would be helped,\u2019 he said in\nJakarta on Saturday. He explained that Commission VII \u2014 which oversees\nindustry, micro, small and medium enterprises, the creative economy,\ntourism, and publicity facilities \u2014 has formed the Working Committee\n(Panja) on Creativity and Distribution of National Film to formulate\nsteps to revive the national cinema. This effort is expected to turn\nfilm production into a new economic sector that contributes to the APBN\nwhile also creating broad employment, not only for actors but also for\nsupport staff across fields. Lamhot added that film could become an\nindirect vehicle for promoting tourism. He cited the film Antara Mama,\nCinta, dan Surga which shot on location around Lake Toba. \u2018This also\nraises the potential of international as well as national destinations.\nFor the diaspora, watching this film could move them emotionally to\nreturn home and contribute to tourism development,\u2019 he said. However,\nLamhot highlighted the imbalance in national film distribution. About 70\npercent of cinemas are concentrated on Java, while communities in\neastern Indonesia still struggle to access national films. \u2018This is what\nwe will push going forward to achieve parity. Regulations will be\nimproved and simplified so producers are encouraged to make films,\u2019 he\nsaid. Regarding the idea of a state cinema built by the National Film\nProduction (PFN), Lamhot expressed support but stressed the importance\nof the concept \u2018big screen for the people.\u2019 Local government buildings,\nhe said, can be used as screening venues so public access to national\nfilms becomes easier. \u2018If regulatory and implementation synergies\noperate, film will become a new instrument for our economy and help the\nAPBN,\u2019 he concluded.<\/p>",
