Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Chairman of Commission I of the Indonesian\nHouse of Representatives (DPR RI), Sukamta, has urged that the policy on\nthe absence of a ban on wearing the hijab within the Defence University\n(Unhan) be implemented consistently.<\/p>\n
Sukamta expressed support for Unhan Rector Regulation Number 28 of\n2025 concerning the Guidelines for the Life of Unhan Cadets, which\nstates that there is no prohibition on the hijab. Moreover, he noted\nthat innovations in hijab designs are now highly diverse.<\/p>\n
\u201cI encourage that the space for the freedom to wear the hijab be\nmaintained consistently down to the level of implementation in the\nfield,\u201d said Sukamta in Jakarta on Monday.<\/p>\n
For example, he said, the basic military training process (latsarmil)\nshould continue to permit the hijab as long as the model used supports\nfreedom of movement during training.<\/p>\n
According to him, many athletes are also able to wear hijab variants\nthat are safe and still comply with religious requirements.<\/p>\n
\u201cAll relevant parties at Unhan must be in line with this regulation\nand there must be no further deviations in its implementation,\u201d he\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Sukamta stated that the Unhan Rector Regulation actually places the\nvalue of piety as part of the Cadet code of honour.<\/p>\n
Cadets also need to be directed to become individuals who are devout\nin their respective religions, both in their official lives and in their\ndaily lives.<\/p>\n
\u201cImplementation in the field and the Cadets can comply with existing\nregulations in the service while still being able to practise their\nrespective religious teachings because this is a human right,\u201d he\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Previously, Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin confirmed that\nfemale cadets of the Defence University (Unhan) who are Muslim may wear\nthe hijab during their education.<\/p>\n
The statement was conveyed by the Ministry of Defence in the form of\nan official press release after a female Unhan student went viral on\nsocial media for choosing to leave because she was prohibited from\nwearing the hijab during her education period.<\/p>\n
The controversy had been widely discussed on social media regarding\nan admission by someone who chose to leave Unhan because she was asked\nto remove her hijab by the selection committee.<\/p>\n
