A succession of ship accidents within a short period has been viewed\nas a strong signal that reform of the national shipping sector can no\nlonger be carried out in a piecemeal fashion. Abdul Hadi, a member of\nCommission V of the House of Representatives (DPR), stressed the need\nfor a thorough evaluation of the maritime transport safety system\nfollowing the fire aboard KM Mutiara Sentosa II in the Java Sea on\nSunday (2\/8).<\/p>\n
He highlighted that the incident occurred not long after the sinking\nof KM Nurul Salsa in mid-July. According to him, the recurrence of ship\naccidents within such a short period proves that improvements in the\nshipping sector must no longer be done separately or merely target\nspecific issues.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen ship accidents keep recurring in close succession, this is no\nlonger just a disaster. It is an alarm that the national shipping safety\nsystem requires thorough and more serious reform,\u201d said Abdul Hadi, as\nquoted on Monday (3\/8).<\/p>\n
He emphasised that passenger safety must be the top priority in every\naspect of maritime transport provision. Therefore, all ship operators\nare asked not only to meet administrative requirements but also to\nensure that all safety aspects are genuinely ready before a vessel is\nput into operation.<\/p>\n
He cautioned that safety inspection processes must not stop at being\na formality. According to him, seaworthiness certificates, inspection\nresults, and the implementation of safety procedures must genuinely\nreflect that a vessel is fit and safe to carry passengers.<\/p>\n
\u201cSafety inspections must not become mere administrative routine.\nPeople\u2019s lives must not be put at risk due to negligence or weak\noversight,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Abdul Hadi also asked the Ministry of Transportation to conduct a\ncomprehensive evaluation of the shipping oversight system, particularly\nfor passenger vessels on routes with high levels of mobility.<\/p>\n
According to him, the evaluation must cover operators\u2019 compliance\nwith safety standards, the effectiveness of periodic inspections, the\nreadiness of fire-fighting equipment, the completeness of safety\nequipment, and risk mitigation systems during voyages.<\/p>\n
He stated that regulators and ship operators alike must make safety a\nworking culture, not merely an administrative obligation. The public, he\nsaid, has the right to be assured that every vessel in operation meets\nthe highest safety standards. \u201cDo not wait for the next victims before\nreforms are carried out,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, Abdul Hadi assured that Commission V of the DPR will\ncontinue to push for stronger oversight and improved safety standards\nfor maritime transport so that public trust in this mode of transport is\nmaintained.<\/p>\n
He also expressed his concern over the incident and hoped that all\npassengers and crew members still at the scene could be evacuated safely\nas soon as possible and receive maximum care.<\/p>\n
He also expressed appreciation to the National Search and Rescue\nAgency (Basarnas), the Ministry of Transportation, the Indonesian Navy,\nand all parties who moved swiftly in the rescue operation. Nevertheless,\naccording to him, the fire aboard KM Mutiara Sentosa II once again shows\nthat fundamental problems remain in the shipping safety system that must\nbe addressed immediately.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe main focus at present is to ensure that all passengers and crew\ncan be rescued. On the other hand, the cause of the fire must be\ninvestigated thoroughly so that similar incidents do not happen again,\u201d\nAbdul Hadi concluded.<\/p>\n
A total of 24 victims from KMP Mutiara Sentosa II were evacuated to\nSurabaya and Sumenep for medical treatment for injuries sustained during\nthe incident.<\/p>\n
Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi confirmed that the\nevacuation of KM Mutiara Sentosa II in the waters off Sumenep is\nproceeding optimally. An integrated post has been prepared at Tanjung\nPerak Port.<\/p>\n
